A five-day training workshop organized by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has concluded in Astana. The event focused on defining the roles and responsibilities of nuclear power plant (NPP) owners and operators.

The workshop was led by IAEA Technical Expert Eric Mathe, representing the Agency’s Nuclear Infrastructure Development Section. Invited experts shared international best practices in project management, licensing, human resource development, and the safety of nuclear facilities.

On the final day, particular attention was given to preparations for the operation of nuclear power plants, the transfer of knowledge from engineering and design organizations, and long-term operational support. Participants discussed practical approaches to ensuring the safety, reliability, and sustainability of Kazakhstan’s future nuclear power plants.

During one of the sessions, IAEA expert Dan Bigu emphasized that ensuring the reliable operation of NPPs requires the consistent development of knowledge management systems, maintaining a high level of staff competence, and improving mechanisms for sustainable support throughout all stages of a plant’s life cycle.

At the conclusion of the workshop, participants reviewed its outcomes, exchanged views and proposals aimed at further strengthening cooperation. As a result, priority areas of interaction were identified, and approaches to their implementation were agreed upon—demonstrating the strong commitment of all parties to continuing a constructive dialogue.

In his closing remarks, Aset Makhambetov, Deputy Chairman of the Agency of the Republic of Kazakhstan for Atomic Energy, noted that the workshop provided participants with a comprehensive understanding of international approaches to ensuring the safe operation of nuclear power plants.

“The approaches and recommendations discussed during the workshop will serve as practical guidance for the further development of the nuclear sector. Kazakhstan is consistently building its institutional and human capacity to ensure a high level of safety and efficiency for its future nuclear power plants,” — said Mr. Makhambetov.

The workshop served as an important platform for the exchange of experience and for strengthening the professional potential of national specialists, contributing to the deepening of the partnership between Kazakhstan and the IAEA in the field of safe and sustainable nuclear energy development. Moving forward, similar events are planned to be held on a regular basis to further enhance competencies, expand expert collaboration, and strengthen cooperation between Kazakhstan and the International Atomic Energy Agency.
